Route 66 by Harley Davidson An American motorcycle road trip.

The Colorado Plateau is 200 million years old (give or take a day), and it took 17 million years for the Colorado River to carve a channel into it which is universally known as ‘The Grand Canyon’.

Over the border in Utah, Monument Valley’s imposing formations range in height from 400 to 1,000 feet and are up to 215 million years old.

They would have to wait no longer – I was on my way.

I am a 5 foot 11 inch carbon based life form (with an obsession for the film ‘Electra glide in blue’) and, with the age of 50 rapidly approaching, I was about to fulfill a 33 year desire to ride through Monument Valley on a Harley Davidson.

•But how do you go about planning the trip of a lifetime?

•Where do you get the Harley, for a start?

•Whose expertise can you tap into for conveniently located accommodation which won’t break the bank?

•What adventures will you have on the trip, and who will be sharing them with you?

Ride with me through Los Angeles, Palm Springs, the Joshua Tree National Park, Laughlin, Oatman, Route 66, Seligman, the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley (Kayenta), Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Las Vegas, and many other waypoints.

It’s my intention to both inform and amuse you, so climb on board and you’ll arrive in Las Vegas wearing a bandana and with nearly 1500 miles of experience on the south west America roads behind you.

This is a fun book that is mostly about a long road trip by the author and his girlfriend along Route 66 and other cool touring spots in the Western US. The author is from Wales, UK, so America's hugeness, wide open spaces, and endless roads are of particular fascination to him, and this comes through in this fun-to-read book. Essentially, this is a vicarious Harley-Davidson road trip for those of us who do not have the time, alas, to take such a trip ourselves.
The book also talks about the author's life-long fascination and love for motorcycles. This struck a particular chord with me because I have a similar interest, and in fact I owned several motorcycles very similar to the models the author talked about. In fact, the author did his USA road trip on a Softail Heritage (great choice, by the way) which is of the same Harley family as my beloved Harley Fatboy. So this road trip was of particular interest to me. The author admits at the back end of the book that he came to favor the metric (Japanese) bikes over Harleys, but to be honest he never quite explains why. He talks about the poor motorcycle weather in Wales most of the time, but for the life of me I don't see how a Japanese bike is going to deal with that any better than (or as well as) a Harley. But that's OK -- one's choice of motorcycles is a very personal thing, not to be criticized. I did notice that Meg, the author's girlfriend, chose a Harley Nightster when they got back to Wales. So there.
This is a very fun story that I really enjoyed reading. The author writes well and his love of motorcycles and riding is undoubted. RJB.

A good read for everyone thinking of riding the Great Road. Certainly has some good spots to view and to watch for
very easy read and a lot of info about his ride that is helpful if planning such a trip
It should be good I have not yet read.
Ok read by a Brit on a jaunt through CA, AZ, NV
A nice story - well written and an enjoyable read.
Easy read. Enjoyed the view of a person from UK riding a Harley in the US. gave me a few ideas about my own trip on route 66.
It was a pleasant vicarious ride through places that I've never been myself and now would like to visit. Also, it points out the limitations of touring with and outfit that may not be totally "up to speed" with what they are trying to do. It does have a definite point of view.
